Do first impressions count? Hotels have mastered the art of welcoming people. Guests are swept off their feet in foyers crowned with sparkling chandeliers. Their entrance area sets the tone for the rest of the hotel experience. Similar to when we open the door and welcome people to come inside, we allow them to enter deeper into our professional or private world. It is beneficial to look at this welcoming area with a different eye. How often do we experience coming from bright natural daylight and stepping through a door into a dark and dimly lit, grim space? To provide the right light levels takes the skill of a professional lighting designer who is conscious of the time it takes our eyes to adapt to changes in brightness in our immediate surroundings. Recently we designed an entrance area of a church so that the older generation could adapt easily to the lower light levels and adjust to the artificially lit environment. We planned the light levels in the entrance area to intermediate between external brightness and internal lower lighting levels. We eliminated the contrast between natural daylight and the harshness of the existing artificial lighting, and at the same time responded to the physiological needs of the maturing eyesight. The three false colour rendering images of the entrance show the lighting effects of different light fittings, they vary from uneven and poor distribution to a nice even distribution of light with a view to create a bright and welcoming entrance area.

Do you like daylight? At the 21st of June 2019, 15.54 o'clock, we celebrate SUMMER SOLSTICE at the Northern Hemisphere! It is the longest day of the year and Midsummer night is the shortest night. Enjoy the length of daylight. The name "solstice" derives from two Latin words. The first: "Sol" meaning sun, and the second: "sistere"  to stand still. Facing South the sun rises higher and higher in the sky on each successive day. On the day of solstice, the sun reaches its highest position in the sky and in this sense, the sun stands still just for a moment. Imagine the consequences of the sun standing still for our planet...?! We, at leolightdesign, are passionate about sunlight and conscientious about our planet. Would you like to work and live under the blue sky? You may think that I am not grounded in reality. Today a lot of professionals in the building sector and even lighting designers think only about artificial lighting. Sadly this means that we continue to live and work under cave like light conditions as well as having to foot a hefty electricity bill. Over 200 years ago Francois- Joseph Belanger and François Brunet already planned a dome to bring skylight indoors, when they created in 1811 the Bourse de Commerce in Paris. Based on this idea Cuthbert Brodrick designed the Leeds Corn Exchange in 1862. After refurbishment it re-opened in November 2008 as a boutique shopping centre for independent retailers. And YES while being indoors everyone can enjoy the English blue sky. We, at #leolightdesign, have changed our design practice along time ago. While we consciously prioritise daylight, we supplement the lack of it with artificial lighting. Do you trust in gold - heavy, hard and holy? The text: "IN GOLD WE TRUST" is printed on a concrete slab on a pavement in a city in Germany. The dichotomy between reading GOLD and seeing CONCRETE made me question myself! Where do I stand? I spent some time walking on sand in the Sahara desert. Every step is a challenge. While sometimes sand is flowing and soft, at other times it is hard like concrete. When looking at sand you simply don't know what to expect- solid or soft? In the desert I learnt to fall and I learnt to get up and continue on my path.
