My personal experience in healthcare environments and my research into the lighting design of hospital wards has made me conscious of the lack of light in our working and healing environments. Knowing that the right quality of light can enhance our well-being and health, I want to bring good quality light indoors and offer lighting solutions, which meet everyone’s personal needs for light.

Having worked as Midwife and Charge Nurse in hospital environments for 14 years, I observed that patients recovering after surgery and on the hospital wards were drawn towards windows and that doctors and nurses hankered after daylight.

I began to wonder whether there was a relationship between patients recovery and what appeared to be oppressive and monotonous hospital ward surroundings.

I decided to do a research study into the lit appearance of the hospital ward environments from the perspective of vulnerable patients. The patients I interviewed described their overall impressions of the hospital ward appearance as glaring and boring. They complaint that the flicker of fluorescent tubes caused headaches and eye strain, they found it difficult to read and to sleep at night under the lighting.

The question we have to ask is -

What kind of lighting in the healing environment do we want our family members or any person to recover in?

Light can be life spending, when we choose good quality lighting solutions.

I knew that I was creative and I wanted to find a creative language to express myself. I chose to study Art and Design in the UK and found that true creativity happens outside the boundaries of tradition. The first time I stepped into the realm of freedom, I was overwhelmed by ‘nothingness’. Yet I soon discovered exploring this boundless space that ‘nothingness’ consisted of endless possibilities and that I could create from within using my own imagination.

At that time I started to rebel against the educational authority who wanted me to create ‘pleasing’ or ‘provoking’ art objects to ‘look at’.

Instead I wanted people to ‘experience’ darkness, light and space.

In my view the intangible, invisible quality of white light makes my work a sensual experience. It is however important to understand that while I create light installations as an opportunity for a sensual experience; it is the subjective experiences of the participants which are paramount in the encounter with light and space.

In order for people not just to sense light art, I decided to research into the possible relationship between coloured light and emotional responses. My study identified the visual pathway of coloured light into the brain and investigated whether one colour provokes one emotion, as so readily believed.

Today I combine creativity, light installations, and my knowledge into coloured light and health and use them to design good quality lighting solutions. My intention is to create lit atmospheres which respond in different ways to the architecture of the building, yet central to light and space is the direct visual and non-visual experience of the person living and working in these environments.

I fill spaces with natural and artificial light. Ideally people feel that they are immersed in light and therefore experience their inner aliveness.
